Joint and Trigger Point Injections

Trigger Point Injection Treatment Benefits

Not every chiropractor's treatment involves the back or the neck. A good amount of technique and care is associated with the nervous system and soft-tissue pain treatment. Joints also receive a lot of attention from chiropractors, given their importance for movement, leverage and rotation. A Family Practice & Wellness Center of Cartersville, GA, offers trigger point solutions.

Understanding Trigger Points and Treatment

When muscles operate, they do so by contraction and loosening. For most parts of our body that involve motion, there are opposing sets of muscles to help pull forward or backward or to twist. In other areas, one set of muscles lifts, and gravity controls the opposite direction. When things are healthy and working correctly, the muscles relax until needed again. However, with stress, over-alertness, chronic tightening, and maintaining unnatural positions for extended periods of time, and muscles develop “knots,” or contraction points that don’t loosen again. The result is pain, a tight, bound-up muscle set and a loss of flexibility or movement capacity. These areas are also referred to as trigger points.

Methods of Trigger Point Treatment by a Chiropractor

Trigger points tend to stay locked up and don’t release on their own. Instead, proactive treatment has to be applied to help break up the contraction and provide flexibility again. For years, deep chiropractic massage was a go-to approach, but this only worked on accessible muscles, such as the shoulders and back or legs and arms. Today, alternative methods include trigger point injections which apply different mixtures of corticosteroids, anesthetics, or even Botox to cause the trigger point to break up.

One of the most common pain areas related to trigger points involves the fascia tissue, a wrap-around layer on the outside of the muscle. This can become inflamed with irritation and produces painful symptoms. Plantar fasciitis in the foot arch is the most common example. Trigger point injections are specifically suited for myofascial pain symptoms, especially when other treatments have shown no decent results or pain relief.

Joint pain can also be treated with trigger point injections. The treatment helps break up swelling and resistance in joints that are suffering from inflammation and binding of the soft tissue around the joint itself, impeding motion and rotation as well as triggering sharp joint pain.
